August 19, 1948 - August 26, 2021
Norma Medina Varela was born in Delano, CA on August 19, 1948 to Ellgio S. Medina and Herminia Miranda Medina. She was the ninth child out of a family of ten. At the age of fifteen, she made the decision to give her life to Jesus Christ by being baptized in his name on Juy 11, 1964 at Delano Apostolic Bible Church. Norma graduated from Delano High School in 1966 and then attended CBAN (National Apostolic Church College) and Chabot College in Hayward, CA, where she graduated with honors in 1970. Norma married the love of her life, Moses R. Varela, in Delano on June 20, 1970 and purposefully waited until after her college graduation because, as she would jokingly say, she wanted to have her maiden name Medina on her diploma. In 1998, she earned her bachelor's degree in ECE & Development Disabilities and worked for the local school district for many years. In 1980, Moses and Norma heeded the call from the Lord Jesus and became Pastors of the second Apostolic Church in Hayward, CA for ten years. During this time, Norma founded Happy Day Express Preschool & Hayward Christian Academy. In 1990, they moved to Yuba City to become the Pastors of Yuba City Apostolic Church until now. Throughout her ministry, she was a Sunday School teacher, conference speaker and volunteer. Most notably, she volunteered for H.O.P.E. (Cancer Ministry for the Apostolic Assembly), Sutter Library Literacy Program, Rideout Hospice, and the American Cancer Society. To volunteer was one of her many passions and she always sought for ways to get involved in the community. She always encouraged the church to participate in Food Drives, Christmas Toy Drives, and other community-oriented efforts. On August 20, 1994, Moses and Norma's life changed for the better when they adopted their son, Michael A. Varela, at the age of 12. Michael later married Maria Belen Covarrubias, who gave Norma three wonderful grandchildren which brought much joy to her. Norma enjoyed puzzles, board games and reading. She loved reading so much that the public library would no longer ask her for her library card. They knew her so well. She was always up for an adventure and taking road trips to explore and sightsee. Norma loved the Lord with all her heart and had an unshakeable faith which was evident throughout her life. She is going to be greatly missed by all who knew her for her encouraging words, wisdom, friendship, and love. Norma is survived by her spouse, Moses R. Varela, son, Michael and Maria Varela, three grandchildren, Michael Alexander, Marie Bethany and Natalie Olivia. She was preceded in death by her parents Eligio and Hermina and brothers Joe Medina and Eligio Medina, Jr. Funeral services are planned for Friday, September 3, 2021, 6:00 p.m. at Hope Point Nazarene Church, Yuba City. Saturday, September 4, 2021, 9:00 a.m. at Yuba City Apostolic Church, Yuba City. Burial will follow at Sutter Cemetery.
