Shirley Jane Underhill, a longtime Yuba City resident, passed away unexpectedly January 20, 2021. She was born May 1, 1935, in Live Oak, CA, to Lundy and Leona Lewis. Shirley was a devoted wife to her husband for 67 years, a caring mom to her children, and a huge supporter of her grandchildren. After graduating from Yuba City High School with honors in 1953, she married her high school sweetheart James Underhill. The adventure began when they eloped to Reno. With little money to their names and a tank of gas these two embarked on a life journey together that would have a positive impact on those they met along the way. Settling into life together Shirley went to work as a secretary so they could afford to put Jim through college. Shirley loved her family and raised her children in a way that instilled family values that would serve them well as they grew up and started their own families. She supported her grandchildren by being present at so many of their activities. Holidays were a special time where the family would gather and mom/grandma was always there with her loving smile and huge heart to make sure everyone realized the importance of family. Shirley was always available to lend a helping hand to those in need. She was a great listener and often shared her wisdom with those in need. She built deep relationships with those she met throughout her life. Many of those friends thought of her as their 2nd mom or grandma. Shirley loved to travel with her husband Jim to visit with friends and family. The trips took them to most of the United States, including Hawaii and many countries in Europe. When not in their Yuba City home or traveling she and Jim spent a lot of time at their second home at Lake Almanor. Shirley loved life and never let life's obstacles change her attitude. She believed that no matter what the day would bring she would make the most of it. Shirley was a giver. She rarely asked for much but instead would make sacrifices for others. Shirley was an inspiration to all that met her. Over the years, she had many medical challenges but never complained or questioned "Why me?". Instead, she held her head high and was the first to say she would get through it. We will miss her smile, sense of humor, but most of all her deep love for her family and friends. Shirley was predeceased by her son, David Underhill and her sister, Betty Parr. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, James Underhill; sister, Peggy Miller (Roy); sons, Steve Underhill (Nella); Craig Underhill (Karol); and Gary Underhill (Jill); six grandchildren: Jennifer Permenter (Kevin); Michael Underhill; Alden Underhill (Bethany); Austin Underhill (Jaelin); Caitlin Hurtado (Ricky); Spencer Underhill; and eight great-grandchildren. She also leaves many other family members and friends who will sadly miss her. No services will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Shriners Hospital for Children.
